Happy 21st Birthday Kaitlyn

 Dear Kaitlyn,

Twenty-one wonderful years of watching you grow and learn. I don't think I could admire anyone more than I have admired you. With your great will and tenacity to do whatever you set your mind to with all of the roadblocks that get thrown in your way. The things you have experienced in your short life I truly believe would have made me crumble. But they have just made you stronger and more determined. I have always loved that so much about you.

This is a big birthday. And as usual you have lots of big plans for the year ahead. I am so looking forward to seeing how it all unfolds. Daddy and I will always be here for you. And just know, just because I might not be jumping up and down with excitement when you tell me one of your plans, or I tell you I don't think something is a good idea, that 100% does not mean I think you're stupid. I could never ever think that about you. Not after everything you have overcome in your life. I'm just a mom who worries and wants to protect you from ever getting hurt. Doesn't mean I am right though. You have to make your own choices in life and I know that, but it doesn't mean I'm going to stop playing devil's advocate for you if I think you should look at something from a different point of view.

I want you to go out there and live your life however you see fit. And Daddy and I will be proud of you no matter what. Because you are a good, kind, considerate and helpful person. We know only good things are meant to happen for you.

I miss the little girl you used to be, but absolutely love the beautiful, strong, confident young woman you have become. Happy birthday Katie Kiddles! I hope all of your dreams come true.

Love always,

Mom

P.S. Sorry there's no picture, but you know how you are with having your picture taken ;).

Happy 20th Birthday, Kaitlyn

 Dear Kaitlyn,

Happy 20th birthday! You're getting so old; or so you keep telling us. I know you still are toiling over what to do with your life, but try not to stress too much. You'll figure out what's right for you. But always make sure whatever you do everyone around you truly sees and appreciates your value.

I am looking forward to what adventures you will be getting yourself into this year. I know you have a lot of big plans, so I hope everything works out the way you want it to. Keep working hard, but finding ways to have a good time.

Thank you for all the help you offer with your siblings and around the house. We all really appreciate you so much, even if we don't always say it.

I hope you have a great 20th birthday. Congratulations on making it through your teen years. Happy birthday Katie Kiddles, I hope you have so much fun today.

Love always,

Mom

Happy 19th Birthday Kaitlyn

 Dear Kaitlyn,

What a year it's been. Not exactly how any of us thought it would go, and everything you worked so hard for all seemed to end in a fizzle. But in true Kaitlyn fashion you plugged on probably a lot less phased by all you missed out on than I was.

I know you think 19 is no big deal. Nothing big happens this year, it's just another day, but I know you will make this a great year. Whether it's going back to school in the fall, or finding yourself the job you see yourself doing, you will figure it all out. Maybe not this year, but everything you challenge yourself into doing always leads you to a new adventure and something new you find out about yourself. Don't think you have to figure it all out at once though. Now is the time to try new things and explore all of your interests.

I am truly looking forward to you finding your path. And always know your father and I will always be here with you every step of the way cheering you on and offering advice whether you want that advice or not.

Happy 19th birthday Katie Kiddles. I hope you have a lot of fun today and a great year ahead. I love you!

Love always,

Mommy

Class of 2020

This blog has become mostly a place where the kids birthday letters reside. As the kids have gotten older I have found it harder to blog because a lot of the trials, tribulations, and triumphs haven't really seemed like they are mine and mine alone to share. So my Monica's Mom Musings blog has pretty much shut down long ago. And this is what I've had left as well as Facebook to share what's going on.

Today, I felt the need to say something that's a little more than a Facebook post. You see in the midst of this pandemic Kaitlyn has lost a lot. She was supposed to get her driver's license right as everything shut down in our state so that has been put on hold. She was supposed to have an 18th birthday bash to end all (okay, not really, but she had big plans for her 18th birthday that had to be put on hold). Senior prom, cancelled. Senior trip, cancelled. School is now officially as of today out for the rest of the year. And we still have so very much unanswered questions about what is going to happen for the class of 2020.

And no, Kaitlyn and her school are not the only class dealing with this. I feel for every single Senior out there. Kaitlyn's school put together this 15 minute video about how much they miss everyone and plenty of shout outs to the class of 2020 in there. And I have been holding it together all this time, but watching that cheesy video the school and staff put together I couldn't hold back the tears anymore.

I got to thinking all the way back to even before I met Kaitlyn. When she was just a teeny tiny little embryo in my stomach in 2011 when 9/11 happened. I was pretty newly pregnant with Kaitlyn and it seemed like the world was ending then. I cried so hard wondering what am I doing bringing this baby into THIS world, this is awful. She was born seven months to the day of 9/11 and it was all still very fresh in everyone's mind, all over the news it kept saying, today is 7 months since 9/11.

Life marched on though, Kaitlyn made plans for her future, and dreamed big. This was supposed to be her year. She worked so hard for this. She isn't getting the chance to say goodbye to her friends, she had no idea the last time she saw them could very well have been the last time she actually saw them. She can't get her yearbook signed by her friends, she's not getting the prom that she insisted she didn't want to go to anyways, but now that she can't it's super disappointing. And there is going to be nothing like what she envisioned, if they even get some sort of graduation. Everyone says they will do something, but it's not going to be the same.

That video her school made hit me super hard though. They came into this world in a time of war, and now they are graduating in a national pandemic. It's not supposed to be like this. My heart breaks for the entire class of 2020 and it also breaks for the parents of the class of 2020. We too had big dreams for what this year would be like, the memories that would be made. And they did not include toilet paper shortages, school ending months earlier than it was supposed to and being switched to online, and the very real realization that graduation, at least in the traditional sense of the word was simply not going to happen. And of course I want everyone to be safe, I know this is the way it has to be, but I should be crying tears of joy right now not tears of sadness for what my daughter is missing out on.

I know she will rise above all of this, I know she will make of her life everything she has dreamed of it, and she will go forward head held high. But some day when she either has children of her own and/or nieces and nephews asking her about her senior year, I just wish this wasn't the story she would have for them. I mean I guess depending how she tells it, who knows it could end up sounding pretty cool. And it will be a graduating class all of us will be talking about for years to come I would imagine.

Class of 2020, it was supposed to be your year. We are all grieving with you.

Happy 18th Birthday Kaitlyn

Dear Kaitlyn,

It feels like just yesterday I was sitting at home playing Bejewled on the computer completely unaware that I was in labor with you. Your dad knew though, he watched me playing that computer game and timed how many times my face winced in an hour. Here we are though 18 years later and you are still full of surprises.

I'm sorry this day isn't going to be what you had hoped it would be because of this pandemic. Frankly, there have been a lot of unfair things about this whole thing that have happened to you and I completely understand how disappointed you are. I do hope your day ends up being better than you have been expecting. If nothing else, I guess you'll at least be getting a lesson that things don't always go as we plan them to, but that doesn't mean it has to be a bad thing. Okay, maybe I'm actually getting this lesson. Sometimes I feel like you take these kinds of things better than I do. You do deserve so much more though. We will make the best of it all though.

My wishes for you this year are that you begin the first steps in pursuing your dreams. Whatever those may be and however they may change. You are such a hard worker with such a big heart and so smart (yes, you are smart) that there isn't a doubt in my mind that you will do whatever it takes to do what you want to do in life. Always know that Daddy and I will always be here for you no matter how old you get and no matter what you need. We are your biggest cheerleaders now and forever and just want you to be happy.

Happy 18th birthday Katie Kiddles, I hope all your wishes come true.

Love always,

Mommy

Happy 17th Birthday Kaitlyn

Dear Kaitlyn,

Happy birthday! What a crazy rough emotional year it has been for you. In case you didn't know this I am super proud of how you have handled everything. You have been faced with some very difficult situations that many adults in your same circumstance wouldn't have handled with the amount of maturity and strength that you have. And that makes me so proud, and probably a lot relieved as your mom to know as you continue to take these steps towards independence that you are going to be just fine.

I do hope when you look back on 16 though that you can remember the good times more than the bad ones. While each moment (the good and the bad) will shape who you are, I do hope you have some fond memories of things that have happened this year.

Going forward continue showing your strength and maturity. Remember, you can do whatever you put your mind to and no one including some immature insecure little boys can stop you. You are going places kid. Just believe in yourself and the amazing talents and abilities you have. Tackle everything you come across with that wonderful kind, giving personality of yours and your beautiful smile. You will in the end always come out on top so long as you do that.

I hope 17 is a great year for you and you have infinitely more ups this year than you have downs. Reach for the stars Kiddles, I know you can do it!

Love always,

Mommy

Happy Sweet 16 Kaitlyn

Dear Kaitlyn,

How is it that you are 16? I can't believe it. It has been a pleasure being your mother and watching you learn and grow. You have been an amazing advocate for yourself especially this year at school and really have kept yourself on the right track. I'm so proud and very relieved to know that you got this. And always know I will also always have your back. So if you're ever "not getting your way" (ha-ha) you know who to call on. I will take on anyone who's not treating you right or doing for you what you deserve.

I know things around here have been very crazy and tense lately. It's not your job though to fix things that have been happening at home lately. I appreciate and love you so much that you want to make things easier for me, but I know everything will work out just the way it's supposed to. I might get mad and yell and scream and maybe even complain about what's happening, but it's not something you need to be worried about. You just keep being you and working your butt off to get whatever you want.

The sky is the limit for you. I can't wait to see what the next two years of high school are going to bring for you and beyond. I have no doubt that whatever you want to happen you will make happen for yourself though and you'll do it with courage and conviction never losing who you are. Keep dreaming big and pushing hard. You keep breaking those glass ceilings and showing people that when you put your mind to something you will make it happen!

Happy sweet 16 Katie Kiddles. I hope it's everything you wanted.

Love,
Mommy

Happy 15th Birthday

Dear Kaitlyn,

Happy birthday, you're halfway to 30, or a quarter of the way to 60. I know you have been excitedly anticipating me declaring that you made it to halfway to 30. So there it is kiddo.

This year has been full of changes for you. You're really maturing and coming into your own and I love watching you do what you do. You are fearless and I'm always in awe of you. I'm enjoying this ride we're on together and watching you as you plan your future and make hard choices seemingly easily. It's not easy to abandon something you dreamed of for so long and try something that you never even imagined it was for you. I think I was more nervous about this decision than you were though. You have taken it and run with it and you're doing great. I really look forward to seeing all the things that you do.

If I had one piece of advice for you it would be don't be so hard on yourself. You sometimes can be your toughest critic. You have skills and people recognize that. Believe that they are right and keep showing your naysayers what you got. Because when you put your mind to something you will always shock and amaze people. You do for me all the time. I'm so proud of you.

I hope 15 is a great year for you. I'm looking forward to our day together of ear piercing, haircuts, lunch, and painting. Happy 15th birthday Kaitlyn. I love you.

Love,
Mommy

Happy 14th Birthday

Dear Kaitlyn,
Wow! You're 14. What an important year this is going to be for you. You will graduate from middle school and move onto high school and really begin to pursue your dream of being a hairdresser. I can't remember a time that you didn't want to be a hairdresser.

You made it! You got into the school you wanted to, and not by chance. All because of your hard work and perseverance to overcome whatever life throws at you. I think this is what I admire about you the most. When things don't come easily to you, you push through it and try your best. You have to work harder than anyone I know at certain things. And it has paid off for you. All that hard work and good behavior got you into the school of your choice and I just know you're going to excel there.

Don't ever get bogged down in I can'ts because you have proved time and time that you can. You absolutely can do whatever you put your mind to. Anyone who tells you otherwise you need to prove wrong.

As cliche as this sounds, the world is your oyster. It is what you make of it and I know you will make the most out of any opportunity you're presented with.

Happy birthday to my sweet Katie Kiddles. May you forever and always know how much you are loved.

Love always,
Mommy

Happy 12th Birthday Kaitlyn

Dear Kaitlyn,
So this is your last year being a "kid".  Next year you will be a teenager!  I'm not even sure if you're excited about that or not.  Truth be told, I'm not.

As we have been approaching your birthday I have been thinking, where has the time gone?  It just seems to be going by so fast.  I am so happy with the choices you have made so far with your life though.  I think you might be one of the bravest kids I know.

I know it was hard for you to leave behind your friends this year to go to a school that is so far away from home.  And you so easily could have just given me this one year and not really put any effort into actually liking it, but instead you have made the most of it.  You instantly made new friends while maintaining your old friendships.  You have gotten up before the sunrise every day without fail to get on that bus and make that long ride to school.  Leaving before everyone and getting home later than everyone.

It's such a long day, but you have embraced it and you are doing what it is that you always do.  Impressing everyone you meet with your work ethic, grit, and determination.  Not to mention your extremely generous heart.

Sometimes I wonder if I can ever teach you anything more.  You have taught me so much about life and how to just roll with the punches and never give up.

There is still something I can teach you and remind you of all the time though.  That generous heart of yours, protect it!  Keep giving it out to people freely, but do be careful.  Don't give away so much that you lose yourself.  By this I mean, don't be so eager to please everyone that you forget to take care of you.  I always tell everyone how much like me Natalie is, but one area that you are like me is that need to please everyone.  And I'm here to tell you it comes at a price.  So put yourself first sometimes, don't be afraid to tell people no if you need to.  Especially if it's something you know would be the wrong thing to do.  If someone really is your friend and truly loves you, then they'll love you even if you tell them no to something.  So don't forget that.

Keep on smiling, I love seeing your beautiful smiley face.  I hope your last year as an official "big kid" is a great one!  I love you, happy birthday!

Love,
Mommy

Happy 11th Birthday Kaitlyn

Dear Kaitlyn,
Boy oh boy, where do I start?  You're 11 years old!  It feels like just yesterday you joined our family, but here you are growing and changing and turning into this amazingly smart and independent young lady.

I know you are hesitant about going to this new school next year, but I really think you are going to love it.  I admire that you can give me a year to try it without much objection.  I know you will give it your all and I really can't wait to see what you will try out there.

You haven't shied away from a challenge yet so whatever you do, don't start now.  This is your time.  Your chance to try out new things that we could only dream of for you and you're going to do great and shine like the star that you are.

I am really looking forward to what this next year is going to bring for you and watch you really come into your own.  It has been an amazing 11 years with you and you are growing and maturing every day.  I can only imagine what the next 11 years will bring for you, but you know the skies the limit for you and no matter what you do or where you are you will be a success and you will be loved.

So happy birthday to you Katie Kittles.  I love you!

Love,
Mom
